Bariatric surgery :
Any procedure addressing weight loss by the use of surgery.
gastric banding :
An adjustable and inflatable band placed around the top of the stomach to reduce its capacity.
Gastric Bypass :
A larger operation than the gastric band whereby a small pouch is created at the top of the stomach. Food enters and leaves the new pouch bypassing the rest of the stomach.
Laparoscopic Surgery :
A form of keyhole surgery where only minimal incisions are needed.
Intragastric Balloon :
The gastric balloon is a form of weight control in which a balloon is fed into the stomach via the mouth and then inflated to give a general feeling of fullness. Although an effective procedure it can only be used in the short term. For safety reasons gastric balloons have to be removed after about 6 months.
